The Canada Revenue Agency is preparing a new feature for the upcoming tax season. Starting February 22, 2027, individuals, authorized representatives and tax preparers will be able to use a new authentication step when filing or adjusting an income tax return online.
For 2026 income tax returns, this step will be optional. Its purpose is to confirm the identity of the person initiating the filing and better protect personal and financial information from unauthorized or fraudulent returns.
What will change for the 2027 tax season
The new step will require users to sign in to a CRA account. Once authentication is successful, the user can continue with electronic filing.
The announcement applies to the federal return filed with the CRA. In Quebec, the provincial TP1 return continues to be filed with Revenu Québec through its own process.
How it will work in different situations
You file your own return
In your tax software, NETFILE will let you choose to authenticate by signing in to your CRA account. This check confirms that you are filing your own return.
An authorized representative files for you
An authorized representative will also be able to choose authentication through NETFILE when filing a return for someone else.
A tax preparer files your return
With EFILE, the preparer can authenticate through their own CRA account. This confirms the identity of the preparer initiating the transaction and does not require the client’s sign-in credentials.
While the session remains active, a preparer can continue filing returns without authenticating for every client. Authentication is required again after the session ends.
Four checks to complete before February 2027
- Sign in to your CRA account.Make sure your credentials work before the busiest part of tax season.
- Resolve a locked or restricted account. The CRA recommends fixing access issues before filing.
- Add a backup multi-factor authentication method.A second method can prevent delays if your usual option is unavailable.
- Review your personal information.Confirm that your address, contact details and other account information are current.
If AU Comptable prepares your return
You do not need to share your CRA password, authentication code or other sign-in information. AU Comptable uses its own professional access for electronic filing permitted by the CRA.
To streamline your T1 and TP1 return, gather your tax slips, receipts and information about your family situation, income and credits. Our online tax form guides you step by step and does not ask for a SIN.
Frequently asked questions
Will authentication be mandatory for the 2027 tax season?
No. For 2026 income tax returns, the CRA describes this step as optional. It offers an opportunity to become familiar with the process while adding another security check.
Should I give my CRA password to my accountant?
No. Never share your CRA password or authentication code. When a tax preparer uses EFILE, they authenticate with their own CRA account.
What if I am filing a tax return for the first time?
A first-time filer with no filing history will not be able to choose this authentication option, but can still file through NETFILE. A tax preparer may also file the return.
